From Oscars to Ottomans

Watching the Oscars is always a favorite annual event for me. While most of us are hoping our favorite film will take away Best Picture, my take-aways go beyond the norm. Through out the program I carefully jog down my observations on the fashion, jewelry and colors of the attendees. Interior Designers are always looking for new inspiration and following the fashion trends often gives us a birdseye view of what we may see in home interior trends in the coming months. The Oscars are no exception in providing us with an plethera of ideas.

So, what did we see this year? Neutrals, simplicity and pared down jewelry were front and center. There were very few dressed in color, the fashions were simple and minimum jewelry was worn. How does this transcend to home interiors? It is a well known fact in the home interiors business that during a recession the trend tends to lean more to traditional and neutral interiors, so it was no surprise to see this at the Oscars. It has been showing up in many fashion ads such as this one for Pipelime which was recently emailed to me.

So while this trend lives on in our recession,  lets not give up on color and take some cues on what you are seeing on the racks this spring. See below Marni Elyse Katz ideas taken from the runways in her piece for the Boston Globe Magazine titled  “FASHION IN THE HOUSE”.
