Tricky Transitions
Always a difficult task, transition spaces in homes are tricky to design, decorate or color. Hallways, stairways, foyers, etc… are meant to transfer people from one space to the next. As such, they can be problematic to decorate since they “touch” other rooms in the home. The paint color and design colors schemes should work together and complement. Here are some thoughts on how to create transitional spaces that complement the bordering rooms and designs.
DEVELOP A LINK BETWEEN ROOMS. In the halls and stairways, use art work, photos, plates, quilts, etc… that share colors or textures from rooms they adjoin with.
LIGHTING IS CRUCIAL IN TIGHT SPACES. Not only to ensure safety around stairs and tight spaces, but lighting can make a small space seem larger and also be used to highlight some of the art or architecture that can blend your rooms. Also try to avoid deep, dark paint colors in these small spots to avoid a cavernous feel.
ADVOCATE FLOW THROUGH THE SPACE. Integrate elements like photos or artwork that repeat in a slow, even manner. For example, a series of pictures that are evenly spaced in a hallway create a visual pattern that can in fluence the speed in which people walk.
KEEP THE PATH CLEAR OF LARGE ITEMS. Use small scale pieces (shallow seating, small display tables)to visually enhance the space. Small things in a small room will obviously make it appear larger than a large peice in a small room.
